“I DON’T MIND BOSOMS THAT ARE USED TO SELL CARS. I DON’T MIND LIPS THAT SELL CHOCOLATE BARS. ALL I WANT, IS THE REVERSE TO BE TRUE – A BULGING GROIN SELLING DISINFECTANT FOR THE LOO…..”

Well that’s not entirely true of course, I would PREFER if women weren’t objectified using outdated stereotypes and bits of their bodies to sell stuff.  But I’m a pragmatist – let’s just do to men, what is done to women via the mass media and have fun!

This is a personal collection of photographs I’ve made of images that appear in the mass media.

I object to the way women are represented in a wide range of media, especially, but not limited to advertising. For example:

  • semi-naked bodies being positioned next to any arbitrary product
  • sexual overtones in the use of women/women’s bodies in advertising
  • general condenscion in ads specifically aimed at women.

My aim is simple – to make all of us a little aware of the casual propoganda that surrounds us by lifting these examples out of the ‘rush rush’ of daily life, into their own space with a few good humoured comments thrown in.

Yes I realise men are also objectified in advertising (see below), perpetuating unrealistic body images but it’s the common combination of sexual and social submissiveness, low IQ and extremely narrow gender roles, combined with body image misrepresentation that I feel affects women more than men.

I’m based in Wellington, New Zealand and this is 100% completely personal blog, and views.

At this stage I don’t have the resources to open up a full blog, moderate comments and accept your submissions, but I hope to be able to expand this in time.

DavidoffAD Men

(While these promote hypermasculine / unrealistic body images for men, they don’t in my opinion simultaneously represent men as stupid / focussed on getting married  / deriving happiness from having a germ-free house / serving women / being subservient to women / their partner etc.
